CD Projekt Red attempts to clarify ‘multiple Cyberpunk game’ reports
Statement plays down reports but doesn’t deny sequel
Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has moved to play down quotes attributed to executives at its parent company suggesting that the next Cyberpunk game is already in development.
Earlier this week, Polish publication Bankier reported that the next big game from CD Projekt will also be set in the world of Cyberpunk.
The publication quoted the company’s vice president Piotr Nielubowicz (with translation verified by VGC) as saying: “Our next big project will also be in the Cyberpunk universe, and we’re already working on it and treating it as a really big and innovative project for us.”
In a separate comment, CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński made an ambiguous statement about having three teams working on Cyberpunk “things – the main game and two more”.
It’s this quote in particular which the company subsequently moved to clarify.
“We currently have a total of five teams working on a number of projects, with three focusing on the development of Cyberpunk 2077,” it said in a statement.
“These include CD Projekt Red Warsaw and Kraków, who are handling the main game, as well as the Wrocław studio, where around 40 industry specialists are engaged in technology [research and development].
“A separate, dedicated team at the Warsaw studio is handling the development of Gwent. The final team is Spokko, which is currently working on a yet unannounced mobile project.”
The work being carried out at CD Projekt Red’s Wrocław studio is believed to be related to a multiplayer component for Cyberpunk 2077.
In an interview with VGC last month, UI coordinator Alvin Liu said online functionality “is very important to us and we’re still working on it, but it’s very much in research and development right now”.
He added: “We’re focusing heavily on the single-player experience, but we’re thinking about what it means to be online. We’ll talk about that after we finish the game.”
Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith also told VGC there are “tons” of stories left to tell in the game universe.
